![]() ![]() ![]() Characterised by geometric shapes, open spaces and a prevailing sense of order, minimalist art has an honest way of presenting itself, where, as put by Frank Stella, “What you see is what you see." Less about symbolism and more about physicality, minimalism immediately differed from its counterparts in the way it distilled the formal elements of a canvas down to their essence. In line with movements such as Abstract Expressionism, which was also being developed in the USA, minimalism established itself as an extension of abstraction. Thus, to achieve true minimalist style, there must be a genuine reduction of complexity.Developed towards the latter half of the 20th century, minimalist art came about as a means of questioning conventional practice whilst drawing attention to the materiality of art. There is also the anonymity of style and objectivity. This is through the artistic use of monochromatic primary colors, as well as basic shapes. Unlike other forms of art, minimalist art places emphasis on simplifying forms. These include photography, which was introduced in 1839 and quickly became a radical new way of presenting and interpreting life’s events. Note, artists that preferred the modern art style leveraged color, new techniques, non-contemporary materials, and mediums. Unlike minimalist art, artists explored dreams, personal iconography, and symbolism as methods of expression. In the 19 th Century, many artists started to craft scenes based on their personal experiences. After the transportation, manufacturing, and technological advances in the 18 th Century and on to the 19 th Century, there were profound changes in the world’s cultural, social, and economic conditions. The birth of modern art resulted from the Industrial Revolution. It is more of cultural dialogue, taking on contextual frameworks like social issues, nationality, community, and cultural identity. In contrast to minimalist art, the central identifying concept in contemporary art is the lack of a uniform organizing principle. Taking on a global influence, art by contemporary artists is a dynamic combination of methods, subjects, materials, and concepts. ![]() Produced by living artists, contemporary art allows everyone to reflect on the day’s most critical social issues. In its most basic form, contemporary art refers to photography, performances, sculptures, paintings, and video art produced today. It is mostly about clean style, creating pieces that are fashionable and without ornamentation. Contemporary styleĬontemporary styles are more of a trend, which means they are continually evolving. In the context of minimalist art, anything can be considered minimalist if the original design puts efficiency before everything else. In addition to the concept of stripping objects to the bare minimum, minimalism also takes space into account. It is easy to confuse the modern, minimalist, and contemporary art styles. Minimalism involves stripping off all extras until only the core is left. In reality, minimalism is more of a life principle than an art style. In technology, Google’s material design, Microsoft’s UI, and Apple’s iOS all incorporate excellent material design concepts in different forms. Today, we can find minimalist designs almost everywhere we look. Let’s focus on the difference between minimalist, contemporary, and modern art. Many minimalist artists tend to focus on work material surface, and as a result, their work is associated with honesty and truth. Minimalist art is associated with conceptual or abstract art forms that challenged conventional thinking about how art should be. As an extension of genuinely abstract art, minimalism eliminates all necessary art forms to expose the focal object’s beauty and purity. The majority of the best artists chose to move away from abstract expressionism, searching for something more appealing and stylish. All the primary artistic schools of thought were changing among the younger artists of the time. As an art concept, minimalism took flight in the late 1950s and early 60s. ![]()

![]() We particularly love the momentary reverse feature. The low-speed setting also extends string life. The lowest sips current from the battery and provides great control, particularly when you turn the trimmer vertically like an edger. When coupled with the drive shaft, it creates one of the few trimmers that operates almost entirely without vibration.Īll of the speed settings provide enough power for average jobs. It also provides a surprisingly high power-to-weight ratio. Its specially designed, high-torque motor has an external rotor and is extremely smooth and quiet. The lightest pro trimmer in this test is this Makita, which racked up points for good industrial design and a host of features, from its solid-steel drive shaft to its three speed settings. We found that especially when we were using the machines to cut down weeds, the growth was so tough, it took an immediate toll on the trimmer’s line, causing us to use the bump feed line mechanism at twice or three times the rate that we would in normal grass trimming. For all trimmers, we wanted to see if each machine was comfortable and well balanced, and whether its line feed was finicky or robust. For gas-engine trimmers, we wanted to judge whether the power they provided was offset by their noise and weight. We also did considerable edging where sidewalks meet lawns.įor battery-powered trimmers, our primary goal was to assess power and run time. However, our most severe testing occurred along the sloping bank of a sand floor drainage basin in southern New Jersey, where we use the trimmers to cut down knee-deep weeds and wild flowers. We use the machines on ordinary suburban lawn grasses such as blue grass, perennial ryegrass, and fescues in a variety of suburban and rural locations. ![]() We test our gas-engine and battery-powered string trimmers in identical fashion. Scroll through our reviews to see the machines that withstood our rigorous test. Whether it’s powered by a gas engine or a battery and brushless motor, every machine here gave a good account of itself in our testing. These trimmers are heavier and more expensive than cable-driven trimmers, but they will stand up better to cutting heavy weeds and light brush. Also, if your needs are closer to the heavy-duty end of the work spectrum, buy a machine that powers the line head with a solid steel drive shaft and not a cable. If you need weed-trimming power above all else, they will provide it, particularly if you equip the trimmer with a heavy-duty line. The gas-engine machines here are pro-duty and take a 50:1 gas-oil fuel mix. If noise reduction is important to you, a cordless string trimmer is your obvious choice. A benefit that a battery-powered trimmer provides that a gas trimmer can’t touch is that it’s quiet. Although cordless string trimmers still lack the raw weed-slashing power of professional-grade gas-engine machines, they have narrowed the performance difference. Many people are looking to cordless string trimmers powered by a lithium-ion battery to meet their needs, especially in suburbia. Trimming a large and diverse rural property requires a far more robust power tool than if you live on a 1⁄4-acre lot. The harder you work the string trimmer, the tougher the machine you need to buy. Read on for quick info on the best string trimmers from our testing, then scroll down for buying advice and in-depth reviews.Ī string trimmer spins a line head by means of either a gas engine (in almost all cases burning a gas-oil fuel mixture) or it uses a lithium-ion battery and a DC motor. Equipped with an Aero-Flex trimmer attachment, a string trimmer can function as a mini mower for cutting grass and weeds in difficult areas such as on steep banks and ditches. You’ll be glad of this come winter because pavement with a neat edge is easier to clear of snow compared to one that is overgrown. The notch keeps grass and weeds from growing over the pavement’s edge. ![]() With a deft hand they can be turned sideways to cut a notch along sidewalks, patios and drives. They can cut down tall grass and weeds to keep border areas under control, either prior to mowing or as an alternative to mowing. Either way, the results should be a neat landscape. ![]() Maria is a high school radio host who’s manning Camena’s late-night broadcast. Ironically, Oxenfree 2’s best moments involve its ancillary characters - one in particular who is literally never seen on screen. After spending roughly eight hours with Riley and Jacob in the first playthrough, I am invested in their journeys purely in a “quality time” sense I’ve engrossed myself in their stories, so how could I not eventually become attached? Still, were I not playing the game for this review, I may not have given it a second go, and I wouldn’t have arrived at the appreciation I’m feeling now. ![]() I do find myself more interested in these characters on my second playthrough, which I haven’t yet finished. Likewise, because of the nature of the branching dialogue system, my choices could have been what stunted the narrative during my first playthrough. This could, perhaps, be the result of Oxenfree 2’s nonlinear world the main premise of the game is to set up four beacons, but save the first one, you can do them in any order. Their own stories unravel, somehow, both too quickly and too slowly after hours of character-building dialogue that I couldn’t connect to, I was frequently caught off guard with a major development that came out of nowhere. Night School has once again captured a realistic pattern of speech in its dialogue, with great voice acting, too - but Oxenfree 2’s main characters don’t have the same appeal as their forebears, and in a game like this, characters are everything.īecause Oxenfree 2 is less of a mystery on the paranormal level - it’s the same phenomena as the first game - a lot of the weight falls on Riley and Jacob, two characters that aren’t captivating enough to carry the load. ![]() It was a mature drama with the light moodiness of high school problems, but it also dug deeper into the teenage psyche to touch on grief, change, and relationships. When Riley opens a rift using the radio, she and Jacob are able to step back into Camena’s past. In this industry, you can be a “leader” or a “follower”. It has 25 years of experience, research and development to work with those parts. When a customer pays good money, but doesn’t get the build knowledge or parts they’re expecting, they will often blame the transmission design.Ī CPT 4L60E is much more than just a bunch of great parts thrown together. ![]() Those big name brands that use bad, cheap, worn, or damaged parts OR don’t include all the upgrade parts listed in their build sheets. Many would be mortified if they saw some of the sub-standard work we see come through our shop. It’s very obvious when we get inside units built by others that most don’t possess these fundamentals.Īnother reason the 4L60E has a bad reputation is due to unscrupulous “builders”. This requires knowledge of lube circuits, apply circuits, apply-rate, accumulation, clamping force, apply-pressure, hard parts strength, and clutch, band, and steel material. In sharp contrast to many “builders”, I actually have a comprehensive understanding of how they work. I’ve been working with the 4L60E very closely since they came out in 1993. You’re not going to be flipping burgers one day, and get a job at a big transmission conglomerate and call yourself an “expert” in 2 days because you manage to assemble the parts in the correct order. It’s also not a transmission that you can just go in a parts catalog and order everything marked “Performance”, and expect it to work and/or last. This isn’t a transmission you’re going to build correctly, using an ATSG assembly manual or a YouTube video. There are too many “builders” out there who are promising things that are above their grade levels. The BIGGEST problem with the 4L60E is the huge lack of knowledge and qualified builders. How can we do this, while many claim these transmissions won’t hold up in a typical 300 horsepower application?
